About IIAS

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) is a premier research institute established in 1965 under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is housed in the historic Rashtrapati Niwas (formerly the Viceregal Lodge) in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

The Institute's mandate is to provide a conducive environment for reflective thought and to promote interdisciplinary research in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. It offers fellowships to scholars to pursue advanced research free from teaching and administrative responsibilities.

Over the years, IIAS has built a reputation as a centre for intellectual excellence, hosting distinguished scholars, thinkers, and writers from India and abroad. The Institute's library boasts a rich collection of over 1.5 lakh books and journals, specializing in philosophy, history, political science, sociology, literature, and environmental studies.

Open to Indian scholars for 2 years with full residential facilities and research grant.
